About The Metra Police Department
The Metra Police Department is a municipal force of more than 150 sworn officers and additional civilian staff who are responsible for the security of Metra passengers, employees, equipment, yards, stations and other Metra property. Metra Police handle a variety of tasks ranging from civilian complaints to criminal activity.
The Metra Police Command Staff is active in creating regional partnerships throughout our six-county service area. In partnership with federal, state and local agencies, Metra participates in various training exercises to promote awareness, to prevent incidents and enhance training for effective response.
The Metra Police Department actively liaisons with the Chicago and Illinois State fusion centers, local, state, and federal law enforcement, and has officers embedded in the Chicago FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, Homeland Security Investigations, and Illinois State Police narcotic task forces.
The Metra Police Department’s Homeland Security Unit, comprised of highly trained officers in Special Operations, Human Trafficking, and K9 Explosive Detection Teams work in concert with federal partners from the U.S. Secret Service and the Transportation Security Administration ensuring safety systemwide.

Metra’s Police Department looks to hire energetic, self-motivated individuals, looking to challenge themselves. Several career paths are available within the agency including Patrol, Investigations, Training, Special Operations, Drones, Human Trafficking, and Task Force Officer.
Applying to the Metra Police Department involves an Officer Entrance Exam, police officer wellness test (PFIT) as mandated by the State of Illinois, personal interviews, background screening, medical evaluation, and psychological screening. Successful candidates hired as recruits are sent to a State certified police academy. Upon graduation, the new officers must complete a rigorous Field Training Program and an eighteen-month probationary period. Current State of Illinois certified officers enter field training immediately upon hire.

Metra COPS Mobile App
Metra customers can use the Metra COPS app to quickly and discreetly report crimes, suspicious activity and other safety or security concerns to Metra Police from a train or station. The free app is available for Apple users in the App Store or Android users in Google Play.
With the app, customers can send a description along with a photo and/or video of the issue being reported. The app ensures discretion by automatically disabling the user’s smartphone flash, and can be configured by the user to allow reports made through the app to be anonymous.
The app is meant to be used to report safety and security issues on Metra trains and facilities, such as a crime in progress, disruptive or aggressive behavior, suspicious activity, unattended bags or packages, vandalism, panhandling, fare evasion or other concerns. It is not intended to be used to report customer service issues, request information during service disruptions or request travel information. Metra Police dispatchers can respond to the customer through the app, send out advisories and broadcast “Be on the Lookout” alerts to app users. In emergency situations such as a crime in progress or an immediate threat of danger to you, other riders or the transit system, the app provides a call button to directly connect with Metra Police.
